I have a 1974 IH 1700Loadstar bus & want to build a "hippy Generator" from a lawn mower engine...does anyone have any suggestions or info? also, I can't get an owners manual for my bus because they combined the years 1974-77 & it costs $150!!! anyone have an old '74 manual for an IH 1700 Loadstar they want to sell??? I'm desperate to get back to SF,CA...I can't stand it here in FLA! thanx

I have read an article or two on the lawnmower generator setup in Mother Earth News, I believe. Basically you remove the blade from the mower and ad a pulley to the motor. Then find a usable automotive generator/alternator and cut a hole in the mower deck just big enough to get the pulley on the front of the generator through. With a little tinkering you can put a belt from the mower's engine to the generator and it will now produce 12v power. I don't recall the specifics of how to wire it to put it to use, but modst any mechanic could tell you. I hope this helps...

If you get any good info on the generator let me know. I'm trying to do the same thing.

Best regards,

For lawnmower generator plans/pics, visit:

there are several links in this site to different versions (even propane powered generators) that taught me all i needed to build my first lawnmover generator.

mine is 3.5 briggs/stratton with 63 amp GM alternator via direct custom coupling. You'll see ideas for both direct couple AC head generators (harder/expensive to do) and belt driven alternator setups(easier/cheaper to do). I use it to charge deep cycle batteries and then run an inverter for AC power. You can skip the AC and use for DC or do both. By utilizing deep cycle batteries, you run the engine only when needed and not all the time for power. This system is great for quiet energy needs.
