|Just looked at a 1973 scania converted to a mh. beautiful inside. been chewed up and spit out on the outside. has a mack engine with a two, count 'em, two speed allison. any thoughts at all. must get 5 mpg. steering box was still tight. no hub odometer. doesn't seems to have seen much use since 1984. figure a million miles in 10 years in service? then add a little more?|

|With 2 forward gears, it doesn't sound like it was intended for long trips. |
Even if it has gone a million or so miles, if the engine has been run regularly and not overheated, there's still life left in it. If it's sat for long periods of time and gotten water into the pan, you may be looking at a rebuild. 5MPG may be charitable (coasting down a hill with a tailwind and the engine shut off).
Diesels have very few requirements: keep the fuel clean, keep the oil in good shape and don't overheat. The engine in that setup should be able to tack another million onto the odometer if it's kept healthy. Just don't have any wild expectations about speed or drivability.
