Help with bus purchase JMc 8-11-04
Considering the purchase of a used school bus. Bus will be used as support vehicle for RAGBRAI, a week long bike ride across Iowa, as well as a couple other misc. trips each year.

Dont know a lot of the details about this bus yet, but what I do know is:

- Flat nose
- 65 passenger, 11 window
- 111,000 miles
- Air brakes
- Tires are 1100's
- 5.9L Cummins Diesel
- Allison tranny

Does this engine/tranny setup have the power we'll need? How does this combo hold up? Any things to look out for?

The price on the bus is less than $2000. Good deal?

Any help is sincerely appreciated!!

All school buses have service records and make sure that it is DOT certified. Talk to the shop forman where the bus has been worked on and get his advise on the condition of the bus. Make sure it has not been striped of good equipment example: tires, battery, safety equipment ect... Alot of companies will sub wore out tires and batteries these are expensive items to replace. The cummings engine should do a good job for you it will definitly keep up with the bikes lol!!!! This basic bus is a good one generally. A 100,000 plus miles is no big deal for a diesel if it has been properly maintained. If you have not owned a bus do not be shocked by the milage.

I am looking to purchase an older used school bus. I live in Charles City, Iowa. Looking for one close to my area. Found some on e-bay but they are long distance, like California etc
