I'm about to take posession of a 1976 chevrolet school bus. I don't really know a lot about it other than it has a '76 350ci engine it. My friend and I got it started the other day and found it runs pretty nice. it has a lot of work to be done but it all seems do-able. I've named her "It still moves" and hope she can make a journey from eastern Carolina to Kansas City, where I plan to make her into beauty. I only have one problem. The brakes don't ever reach maximum pressure. Any ideas on troubleshooting this gripe would be much appreciated. Damon

You are asking for major trouble to get a bus whose air tanks/compressor has a leak and won;t hold air pressure...not to even talk about that low-powered 350 cid engine. My advie is to keep looking for another bus...they are out there, and available for around $1,000 or slightly more in GOOD condition. The 350 Chevy/GM engine has a 3.48 inch stoke...that is just too short to develep much torque..and this engine is not know as a torque engine even when it comes in passenger cars and light trucks. The reason to be concerned about torque production in a bus is that most of them weigh around 8 to 10 tons, empty, or perhaps even higher. To get that much weight moving in a satisfactory manner, and to go up any sort of grade, calls for massive torque production...well beyond the capabilities of the 350 Chevy/GM engine, irrespecitive of the tranny/axle gears you may come up with. I beg to differ on the comment on the 350 engine. It can be made to be a torque producicing egine. It just takes a little work. It might cut down your gas mileage,but if your driving a bus, does it really matter. I say buy it and have fun with it...

I say hell with it, they are too much fun to drive, Ive got a 73 Blue Bird stub nose with a 370 or a 454 GM motor in it, not sure. I know it does the job pretty well but it gets a little hot. I have put a lot of hours into my bus and I love it.
