Roof deck/back porch advise Nigel 1-12-04
I have a 1985 GMC full size school bus. I was want ing to put a platform on the roof as well as a deck off the rear end of the bus. I looking for advise on how to accomlish these goals or if possible areas where I can look at possible plans. Any help would greatly be appreciated. THanks--
happy Rhodes

A platform on the roof would be fairly simple to fabricate. The hardest part would be fabricating a safe ladder getting to it.

A rear deck isn't quite as practical unless you take the space for your deck from some of the interior space. A full size conventional bus has a very large rear overhang already. Adding anything more to the rear overhang could make it very difficult to go in and out of driveways. It would also make getting around corners a little bit dangerous for whomever happened to be on your outside corner.

If you look at Mr. Sharkey's designe, he made his rear deck in space that would normally have been inside the bus.

If the reason why you want deck space is so you can watch the races, the roof is the best location. If all you are looking for is an area to relax in, purchase an awning and sit on the ground--it will be a lot less expensive and more user friendly.

Good luck.

I'm also thinking about a rear deck on my full size schoolie. I want to have a bbq out there next summer at the Woodward dream cruise. (it's the largest classic/exotic car cruise in the world i think) The idea i had is to make it out of expanded metal and have it fold up when not in use. The expanded metal would allow your brake lights to be seen through the deck when folded up. You would have to be creative if you wanted to open the rear door with the tailgate up.
