Has anyone thought of removing the windows and roof from the back three-quarters of a bus and rebuilding with fiberglass (or lightweight materials in general) and using roll bars for safety?

Re: roll bar Mark O. 1-13-04
You could probably do it but I think you would have some real problems with structural integrity going down the road.

While every school bus is a rolling steel cage, the cage is held in place by all of the sheet metal on the inside and on the outside. Removing all of the sheet metal would leave very little to keep the "roll bars" from shifting back and forth and side to side as you travel down the road.

Besides losing all sorts of structural strength, I don't think you would see an appreciable difference in the performance of the bus if you did remove a lot of the steel. Bus perfromance is determined a whole lot more by the "flying brick" aerodynamics than by GVW.

All I can say is if you decide to remove all of the roof and ceiling panels off of your bus, please don't drive anywhere I am going.

Good luck.

IF YOU YOU TRY TO MAKE IT LIGHTER THEN WHY BUY A SCHOOL BUS? UNLESS YOU PLAN ON DRAG RACNG IN A "PURE SCHOOL BUS DIVISION" AND KEEPING THE PROJECT IN A BIG GARAGE TO KEEP THE RAIN OUT OF THE FIBERGLASS SHELL BIG PROBLEM WITH OTHER VEHICLES, vans, hearse, ambulances with fiberglass tops and roofs....
