I'm outfiting an '83 GMC6000/Bluebird into a club bus and am thinking about adding a/c. Should I power it off an inverter or a generator? I have a 4kw, non-RV Generac that I could mount but it's not very quiet. What are the pros and cons of each setup? Thanx

Before you do anything, you are going to need to figure out what your A/C power needs are going to be. If you fail to do that, your system will either be overworked or underworked. Either situation is hard on equipment. Right from the start I can tell you your 4KW generator is not going to be big enough to power the number and size of A/C units it is going to require to keep your bus cool. Invertors will work okay if your alternator is large enough to keep ahead of the drain while you are going down the road. While you are parked, you are going to need a large battery bank to handle the load. The batteries can be supplemented by solar panels on the roof. Again, you need to first figure out what your peak power load is going to be in order to size your generating capacity appropriately. A too small generator will overwork and die prematurely. A too large generator will underwork and die prematurely. If you don't use a generator, you will still need to figure out your peak power load in order to size your invertors and battery bank appropriately. As your size your invertor understand you will lose some of your DC power to the invertor process. To figure out your peak power loads, go to the manufacturers of the appliances you will be using. They will have the start up and constant run power requirements for their products. Good luck. Mark O.

Honda makes a generator that is high tech. i use one every day and love it. very quiet. they are the eu series. they adjust to load so on low demand are idled way down. fyi. it takes a huge amount of a/c to cool a bus in the sun. and a bank of batteries after they are fully discharged start to go downhill quickly.insulate all you can. buster

I have a 1991 Ford/Ward party bus conversion with among other things, an 8 person hot tub inside. I had the same issue. Generator? or Inverter? The best answer is YES!. Get both. I have a 2000 watt inverter (that only cost me 200 bucks brand new from LULU corp). The inverter is connected to pair of golf cart batteries. I also have a gas powered generator that works great as a backup, or to run large loads for a long period of time. The inverter is much more convienent. Generators require fuel most are noisy, there's difficulty in mounting as they require good ventilation, yet protection from the elements.

Get the generator,if ya use inverter at 2000 watt/hr your battry will be used up in 30 min 6 volt at 300 amp or 12 volt at 800 amp it's not the voltage that control the lifespan of the battry.go for 3 12 v with all + conects and all - conected together then the lose + and lose - conected to the vehicle voltage pushes the amprage without the amp then voltage is no good,don't belive me ask andy!
