IH MV446 Gas motor david 9-26-03
Hey folks, i'm considering buying a 76 Superior bus with a ihc mv 446 gas motor and 5 speed standard tranny. any one who can share their experiences with this drivetrain? is it strong? dependable? can i find parts? how bad will my gas mileage be in a 36ft. bus? thanks for your time. david

Any IHC engine is going to be strong and durable. The downside to any of the gas engines is IHC hasn't made any in more than 20 years.

IHC supports all of their products very well. However, some parts and pieces for specific engine that were made more than 20 years ago are becoming scarce. Crankshafts come to mind immediately.

The MV404/446 were very strong engines. You can still see some of them in regular service.

Our church bus has the MV404/5-speed. It has continually turned in an average of 6-7 MPG.

One of the local school districts still has a couple of buses with the MV446/Allison in them. Fuel mileage is more like 3-5 MPG.

Our church bus can cruise all day long at 55-60 MPH. On the hills it does get a little pokey. The MV446 isn't noticeably stronger.

If I was contemplating a schoolie to convert and wasn't going to be going very many miles, a gas powered IHC would be a great choice.

Good luck.

I just spun a bearing in my 446 mv. This motor is so strong and dependable. Does anybody know where there are complete motors?

If you are referring to the 9.0L V-8, run away from that engine as quickly as possible.

They were famous for shaking, rattling, and leaking. The output was never what was never what was hoped for when they were built.

IHC treats them as an embarassment best forgotten so parts and pieces are harder to find than for the gas engines.

Don't set your heart on any particular bus until it is sitting in your driveway. If you shop around enough you will find the bus you want for the price you want and it will most likely not be very far from home.

Good luck and happy trails.

I agree with Mark O about the 9.0 litre engine which is the 550 CI diesel, i would recomend a IHC bus with either a DT-466 or a DT 360 diesel as they are a good quality diesel engine. as far as the 7.3 i think it would of had more power if the engine had a turbocharger on it.
Good Luck
Happy Busing
