Re: diesel engines by Kevin
Post New Message I am a professional mechanic with both 6.9L and 9.0L buses in the fleets I maintain. Although I don't care for either, the 9.0L does produce enough power to keep out of the way of traffic provided it is running like it should. The 6.9L engine is very! underpowered for this application.
Both of these engines have issues:
9.0L recurrent oil cooler leaks
6.9L camshaft problems and oil pump problems.
7.3L engines (the next evolution of the 6.9l are better, and are OK in a van or similar light vehicle.
If you already have a 9.0L and it is running satisfactorily don't change it.
Converting to an inline DT engine is NOT straightforward. I know someone who is trying it. The motor mounts don't line up, the spring is in the way!
