I am new to the idea of school bus conversion and I have a lot of basic questions if anyone cares to help me out I would be very appreciative. What busses/engines/builders are considered high quality and which are so so? Mercedes v.s. Yugo is easy but how does one tell a good bus from a not so good. What should a potential buyer look for in a used school bus? Maintainence costs vs. longevity gas or desiel? Advantages and disadvantages for rear mounted or front mounted engines? Converting the bus can obviously be an unlimited expense. How does one go about estimating the cost of conversion? Any tips on websites to visit - search engines are turning up a lot of non-working and non-maintained sites, books, gurus I should talk to, or event I should attend to learn more? Thanks, DP

I also am interested in converting a bus to an RV after I finish school so I can leave NY and head to my fathers house in texas. I figure that a bus would be more practical for my needs than a moving truck. I am thinking gas powered, hydrolic rather than air brakes, and auto transmission. I think GMAC or Ford might be best to pass for an RV to an insurance co. I also am looking for advice regarding a conversion and would like to be in contact with anyone experienced with bus conversions or also interested in conversions.

I seem to be about two weeks ahead of you.i have purchased two 60'crown metro buses. i have gutted the inside and started scratching my head on where to start. i have found a really informitive site that i want you to check out. coach conversion central-and also bus conversion central. there is stories and picture of actual conversions. and some really good ideas. as for motors-each motor brand has good and better models. i own 10 trucks with cat motors.there really dependableand last a longtime. but there is a drawback. they are the most expensive to rebuild. cummings is the least expensive to rebuild, but more maintainance and shorter lifespans are tere problem. there goodside is anyone can work on them and parts arealot cheaper than cat. i have no experience with detroit, sorry hope this helps..keep in touch we will exchange pictures and nightmares
