The 9L makes a great boat anchor. But changing from the 9L to the 6.9L would be even worse since the 6.9L is just too small for most full size buses. It is particularly too small if you ever want to travel in the mountains in the western states.
The best IHC engine ever built is the DT466. In various versions it puts out anywhere from 190 HP to 275 HP. The torque is impressive as well. It makes the 9L and the 6.9L look like the real weak sisters they are.
There are enough good buses out there with the DT466 that if you really like your conversion, you can purchase a bus with the power package you want and it should bolt right into your chassis.
