Diesel engines darell 6-30-03
What is the better of these two International diesels 6.9 v8 or the
9L? I have a 1986 9L (174K)and have been told by Internatlional Repair place its a good boat anckor. I did want to keep the bus but if the engine is not worth keeping then i will sale, the bus will be my home. darelldance
Re: diesel engines Mark O. 6-30-03
The 9L makes a great boat anchor. But changing from the 9L to the 6.9L would be even worse since the 6.9L is just too small for most full size buses. It is particularly too small if you ever want to travel in the mountains in the western states.

The best IHC engine ever built is the DT466. In various versions it puts out anywhere from 190 HP to 275 HP. The torque is impressive as well. It makes the 9L and the 6.9L look like the real weak sisters they are.

There are enough good buses out there with the DT466 that if you really like your conversion, you can purchase a bus with the power package you want and it should bolt right into your chassis.

Good luck.

I am a professional mechanic with both 6.9L and 9.0L buses in the fleets I maintain. Although I don't care for either, the 9.0L does produce enough power to keep out of the way of traffic provided it is running like it should. The 6.9L engine is very! underpowered for this application.
Both of these engines have issues:
9.0L recurrent oil cooler leaks
6.9L camshaft problems and oil pump problems.
7.3L engines (the next evolution of the 6.9l are better, and are OK in a van or similar light vehicle.
If you already have a 9.0L and it is running satisfactorily don't change it.
Converting to an inline DT engine is NOT straightforward. I know someone who is trying it. The motor mounts don't line up, the spring is in the way!
