1962 gmc school bus conversion Eric Mansfield 4-2-03
I recently bought a 1962 GMC school bus that was converted in '88. It has a 478 gmc V6. I'm brand new to this and haven't yet seen the bus. I bought it on e-bay. I'm planning to pick it up in Portland and drive it to North Carolina in late May. Any advice, suggestions, or warnings would be very helpful.

The guy who sold it to me says it is in great shape mechanically and should have no problem with a cross country trip. I have lots of questions, though. For instance, can one buy AAA for a trip like that? How much do tires cost to replace? Are there lots of places that do that?

Is that engine sufficient? Is it underpowered? Plenty of power? It has a 4-speed manual with a high and a low.

Any advice or warning is greatly appreciated.

Eric

Coming from portland Or? If so that's where I am, theres are alot of places here and along the trip for tires as scholies run the same tires as big rigs. here in prtland though I'd try a place called Western Bus Sales the useualy hav alot of new and used tires in stock for reasonalble prices. as to cost well new will set you back about a grand or more but used are around 500.oo

I have a 1969 Gmc w/ a 290 v-6 she's slow on the hills but sufficent on th straightaways you'll probably reach acrusing speed of 60 miles an hour any more, and trhe engine is really working being pushed too hard especialy on an old one.

yes you can get AAA for schoolies it's the R.V. policy and will be more exspensive than a car,but really worth the $

you might find Yahoo groups "schoolbusconverionnuts" a good sorce for idea's also as it seems to be a more popular discussion group than this one.
hope this helps
Happy bussing Beorn.
