Ford B700 bus with 8.2L detroit diesel Anubis 3-11-03

I just purchased a Ford bus (B700) with an 8.2 L detroit diesel engine in it.

I was wondering if anyone knows the basic maintenance specs for this engine:

Engine oil capacity / type

Coolant capacity / type

Belts / hoses / filters / etc.

It has an Allison transmission. Not sure which one.

It would be nice to know how much fluid it holds, what type to use, etc.

I want to take good care of this setup, and I need to know the basics.

Any help would be appreciated.

Look for a MOTORS heavy truck repair manual around the years of your bus. I just got a Vol 4 Professional series on eBay for $30. They cost around 100 for the older ones and about 400 for the new ones.

I was quoted 1700 to rebuild my tranny and I ended up doing it my self for 150-.

What is the oil capacity of a Detroit
8.2 L Engine. This engine is in a Ford F800?

If you live in a smaller town, I get a lot of help from the local school district mechanic.

Try looking for a manual for it. Your local library might have a MOTOR heavy truck repair manual.

Search for Detroit Diesel 8.2 liter on the net etc.

Good Luck

I purchased a brandnew manual from a detroit diesel dealer for around a 120 dollars. A little expensive but the information contained is so detailed that it is well worth the money.

Hi !

Thanks for all the replies.

I have had pretty good luck getting the information that I needed, and with the B700 in general.

It has been painted, seats removed, generator installed, AC installed, new hoses, belts, fuel shutoff (expensive), starter (also expensive), tires and rims, etc.

So far so good.

Take care,

An answer 13 years in the future! ;)

I wish I would have posted the info when I got it, but there was a lot going on at that time.

You can find out a lot by calling a Detroit Diesel shop and asking if they have the technical service manual for your particular year. I was told that oil capacity depends on the oil pan used, and the number for that is on a valve cover sticker on the engine.

My oil pan is # 0718 and the capacity is 12 quarts.
I use Amsoil 15-40 synthetic oil.

The standard green coolant has been working fine, though I haven't drained it to see it's capacity.

Belts: Two Napa premium XL 25-10935/9430 for the power steering pump.
Two Napa premium XL 25-9670 for the alternator.
There is one more belt for the hydraulic parking brake that doesn't have a number on it.

Hoses: I have replaced the hoses, but the Napa stickers have faded and I can't read them. If Napa can't find them in any of the books, Ford should be able to help.
Just FYI, there are some little ancillary hoses that are tough to get to. I replaced these with the more expensive blue silicone hoses. Just take these to a good Ford dealer and they will get you the correct ones.

Filters: Two Wix 51060 oil filters, Front fuel filter - Wix 33122, Rear fuel filter - Wix 33125,
Hydraulic parking brake filter - Wix 51533
Well, that's it for now. Our bus just completed a 1000+ mile trip after sitting dormant for almost 8 years. Parking brakes needed service, changed all the filters, and it was good to go.
If I get any more info on the other belt or the hoses I'll post it up here.
