Allison MT-30 Beorn 2-24-03
My 1969 GMC Has A Allison MT-30 Tranny.
Its an Auto but I have no real Idea how many speeds. the shift selector says 6 but its hard to trust. I went to te Allison web site and could find very litte info on this model,it seems to be there very 1st model. Also I have some kind of Hydralic breaking system, that seems to take the place of Jake Breaks on a Diesle Rig. I don't Know how to opperate this or the Apropreate conditons in which to use it. any Info would be welcome. -Beorn the bus Bear-

Im guessing that it may be your parking brake. if its a lever it is definately the parking brake.

good luck
Aaron
Re: Allison MT-30 wrench 2-28-03
I got the MT40, which is the next one with more torque. In a 1972 wanderlodge with a 391 ford.
It's a 6 speeds, one of the best tranny Allison built. when selector is in 1-2, it will start in 1& shift not higher that 2, selector in 2-3, will start in 2& shift not higher that 3, when in 3-5, will start in 3, will shift 4, & not higher that 5,
& in selected in 3-6, will start in 3 and shift 4-5-6, which make it 4 speed highway with 2 crawler= 6 speeds.
The braking system is a hydrolic retarder, with the oil cool by the radiator.
when you push the pedal to the floor, it act like a brake without wear for long downgrade. If you you use it in montain, make sure the temperature sensor work with the warning light in the dash.
Gaskets, oil filter & parts are available. Many will tell it's too old, just don't believe them.
If need more info, email by removing the REMOVE in the email address.

Re: Allison MT-30 Beorn042 3-3-03
Thanks FOr the Info Wrench, It totaly jives w/ what little I've been able to dicern by looking at the System.

have you heard of anyone running one of the MT30s? is it as reliable as your MT40? seems to be set up the same.
what kinda mileage do you get w/ you set up and what is your top crusing speed?
sorry I could'nt E-mail you I am in the process of changing accounts. Thanks Again -Beorn-
Re: Allison MT-30 wrench 3-4-03
The tranny is the same except it's rate to a lower torque capacity for a smaller engine ex: ford 330 CID vs 391CID.
I got the 391CID ford with the MT40.
I drive 65-70 MPH &getting around 5 MPG, same milage with a car in tow or a fulled loaded 1 ton van. The best I ever had was 7 MPG at 50-55 MPH, on 500 miles trip, that make 3+ hrs for differance in 2 MPG, so I use the fast lane. I can speed up to 80 MPH
NO TOW. But got the tongue out the tail pipe!! A 330 won't be strong enough for that.

Re: Allison MT-30 boern042 3-6-03
Yeah I have a 305 GMC Driver so that makes sense with the size tranny.
sound like i'll be getting there slow, no matter where I go! that works as long as i get here.
thanks again Beorn.
Re: Allison MT-30 David L. Steinwinder 7-23-04
Recently purchased a '72 blue bird RV. It has an alison (I don't know which one) and a ford engine (I don't know which one). I do know that the ignition controm module (with no identifying marks)is burned out and I can't find another. Has anyone had this problem with their "72 blue bird?"
