Another thought on school buses - have you tried E-Bay? I just looked and there are a lot there. Go to ebay.com, click the link for e-bay motors and the sublink for buses and motorcoaches.
One company claims to have 90 buses - prices around $2,500 if that's in your range. Worth a look if only to determine values of REAL sales and purchases
David:
Really depends a lot on where you live. Call your local school district and see who they contract their services to - many schools are using Laidlaw Transit - and call them. Just ask when they are having their next disposal sale of buses. They get new ones every so many years whether they are abd or good. Full size (72 passenger) are easiest to come by. The shorter ones remain in special ed routes for long periods and then usually are given to Head Start programs. Also, check the govt auctions for fed and state. The Fed site is at: https://www.gsaauctions.gov/index.jsp
Hope this helps

Jerry, thanks for the info.I found one and purchased it 1981 71 pass. from a local school dist. now to remodel it any advice would be greatly appreciated.installing shower, water holding tanks, heating etc.
I am looking for an older conventional nose school bus. I would prefer that it has a diesel engine and possibly a Fuller transmission. I'll probably have to make that conversion though.
I have a slide in pick-up truck camper that was given to me. It has everything in it that I will need. Even water tank and an external gray and black water tanks. Shower in the bath and Hot water heater, Three burner stove and oven, 3-way refrigerator, sinks, commode, 28,000 BT furnace and even a 12 volt microwave. I plan to strip out the camper and use all the parts in the bus.
The big change that I want to do is to cut off the back end of the bus and make a platform to haul atleast two full dressed motorcycles.
I would like to cut the back off and move it (with the rounded corners) forward to accomodate the space to tie down the bikes and still have a rear door.
Fill in all the windows with sheet metal that has crimped edges and weld them into place, then use smaller camper style windows in just a few places.
