Any suggestions why my bus loses power/speed Georgia Southern 12-27-02
I recently purchased a 1982 school bus. It has a 454 with a 4 barrel holly carb. It had been sitting for four years. I changed the oil, belts, and fuel. I can hold a speed of about 60 max on a level suface but when I start going up a hill my speed quickly goes way down like to 25 mph. Anybody know what I need to do???? Thanks

They don't put 454's in school buses they had 366 and 427 tall deck big blocks i would say it has the 366

You need to downshift your transmission to get your engine in the right rpm range so your engine can work efficiently.

Just like on a bicycle if your in top gear and come to a hill you will break your legs off trying to pump up the hill.

My bus also has loss of power, although not that bad. It has a 345 with a 2 barrel holly. It has a vacuum gauge and the more I accelerate the lower the vacuum gets till it reaches zero and the bus stops accelerating. I believe this is due to the type of governor on the Holly. I suspect that if I put a non-governed carb on it wouldn't have the power/acceleration problems.

It sounds to me as if you are having a fuel supply problem.

If you have a governor, determine if it is shutting things down prematurely.

Check your fuel filter(s), fuel lines, and fuel pump to make sure fuel is flowing.

If you are running below 5" of manifold vacuum, the reason why you are losing power is the engine doesn't have enough H.P for what you are wanting to do. It takes a lot of H.P. to push a brick shaped object through the air. Add in tons of steel and it is a wonder you are able to go as fast as you do.

There is a reason why new motorcoaches have 400+ H.P. engines.

Good luck and happy trails.

Well problem solved, go back to the basics. check your plugs, had a man that was a bus mechanic for 40 years check mine out he told me to go get champion spark plugs for some reason the old busses like them. well i did and problem solved. more power all the holes are firing properly now.
