Activists need short (bio) diesel bus Kevin s 9-2-02
We are an activist collective that is looking for a shorter diesel bus to use as a cross country media activism tool.

We are going to convert it to run on used vege-oil from fast food places...basically unprocessed bio-diesel.

We are going to put some computers, low power fm, and other media equipment on board and do "anti corporate" media activism and outhreach at various demonstrations, gatherings, county fairs etc across the country...doing video screenings, uploading to websites etc.

It will be a working group of the global IndyMedia network. This is the main site, (there are about 90 local IMC sites now) -check out:
http://www.indymedia.org/

We are an all volunteer network, so we are trying to get hold of a donated diesel bus. A short school bus, or airport bus etc would be ideal. We are in the NE right now, but can probably pick up a running bus almost anywhere.

If someone wanted to donate a bus, and get tax credit, or 'publicity' in the activist world, we could put a 'thank you' on the website etc...not much maybe...but you would be doing a great help and service to alot of folks indirectly.

Any help, advice etc much appreciated.

You don't convert diesels to run on bio-diesel, you just pour it in. The trick is making the bio-diesel-- the equipment you need would take up all the room in a small bus, plus you would have to spend a few days making fuel everytime you needed to fill up. You will just have to bow down to the corporate pigs and buy their fuel if you want to protest against them. BTW, if there were no corporations suppling us with goods and services, who would be in charge, the government? And that would be better?

I have friends in the Tucson Indymedia Collective. You can either make a mobile biodiesel processing unit which is really no more than a 55-gallon drum, with a agitator motor attached and a valve at the bottom to drain glycerine. You would need a decent space to make it(not in the back of a Circle K on the highway). John is correct in saying that you don't need to do any modifications to the engine for biodiesel, over-estimates the amount of space it would take to make it, and wrong about how much time it takes-less. An other alternative is to set up the bus to rum straight vedge oil from tallow bins. You will need two separate tanks: one which would start and stop the bus on petro or biodeisel and switch over to pure vedgetable oil once the oil has been heated to 160 farenheight. This oil gets heated by a relatively simple modification to your engine which runs your hot radiator coolent through your vedge oil tank. A thermo-solenoid switch can automatically switch it over to vedge fuel when the temperature has been reached. You still need to take time to filter the used frier oil on the road. Maybe just get a really big tank made on it between bio-d collectives, bio-d commercial stations, or friendly garages to make it. Get the book "From Fryer to Fuel Tank". Good luck.

Yes, but you are right that no conversion (besides filtration and heating) is needed for straight vegetable oil (SVO)
I don't think that anyone will give you a bus, no offense. Instead, check auctions for the school districts in your area. Call their purchasing department to find out when/where they do auctions.
I am doing a SVO conversion. I'll post later when complete
