I'd like to add a 3 1/2' deck to the back of my 1975 Crown to haul a 750# motorcycle. The frame on this bus ends at the rear axle. It looks like only sheet metal for the last 6 - 7 feet of bus. Has anybody hung a deck on one of these? Will this body support added weight at the rear bumper? Any experience with modifing or adding frame members?
Thanks
No way in hell you can hang that much weight off the back of a crown. I have seen stupid mexicans in tijuana that weld up trailer hitches on crowns and I have seen (2 times) them rip the back half of the bus off when they get it on a steep hill. Dont hang anything off the back of a crown unless you want to send it directly to the scrap yard. And there is no way exept extending the frame to the back to get around it.
Well, it is done. I found a custom fab shop that started by welding a butt plate in the trunk onto the existing butt plate at the back of the frame. From there they took off with 3" x 4" tube out through the rear of the bus 48". Additional members were added to the existing rear seat struts and out to the sides. The existing bumper was moved to the rear. The deck was rounded to fit both the rear of the bus and the bumper. Skirts were added. The deck blends very nicely with the style / contour of the bus.
Will it last? Dunno, the design and materials look robust.
Passage of time & miles will tell.
