Howdy, Got this '76 IH/Ward with a leaded 345 that eats valves and is tired. Anyone know if a DT? or Powerstroke will bolt up to the stock 4spd tranny? This eng has the front motor mount. Big fab job?
Don't forget you will probably need to change the rear end ratio. The 345 likes to turn no more than 3200 for long term service, which probably gives you around 60 -65 miles an hr (my intl, anyway). If you turn the comfortable rpm's for the diesel, you will be probably be moving a good bit slower. A good rebuild will probably fix your problems for a lot less money.

Dont put in a DT in your bus. Its too long and you would have to cut up the firewall to make room.
I would recommend that you put in a 6V71 detroit diesel. They are short (easy fit), cheap, plentiful, and sound cool and got good torque for your application. If you got an SAE #2 bellhousing it should bolt up to your current tranny with minor mods like a diffrent flexplate.
With enough time and money you can do just about anything. The question you have to ask yourself is if what you contemplate is worth the effort.
The DT466 is longer and will require the firewall to be modified as well as the driveline. In addition, it has completely different engine mounts. For that matter, the MV404/446, the 6.9/7.3/Powerstroke, and the 9.0L all have a very different engine mounts.
The short answer is if you want to repower, it will cost you less $$$ and aggravation if you just purchase another bus with the power package you want and swap everything.
If you do swap, consider swapping the transmission as well. A 4-speed is okay but a 5-speed can help you over the hills a little faster. A 5-speed can support a little faster rear end as well.
Why not crawl around wrecking yards for awhile and find and engine-transmission-motor mount combo that will fit your bus.
A good book to get is the Medium Duty Truck Manual for your make and year of chassis.

That is the question. What will fit in the rig without a major fabrication/alteration effort. What I am looking for is "will a DT series drop in the frame without modification to motor/trans mounts, drive line, parking brake, etc. Would like more torque than the little 345 provides, Dsl or Gas. Thanks for the response.
