Is this a good deal on a bus? Scott in Portland 5-14-02
First, I'm happy to say I finally found a newsgroup dealing with bus conversions. I used a similar group a few years back to impove my knowledge of muscle cars, built one and it stil runs like a champ. So I hope what I can learn from people such as the likes of yourselves, in order to convert a bus. Ok, I found a 1981 International school bus with a bluebird body fairly close to where i live. It is a gasoline engine 404 cid with an automatic tranny and air brakes and has 202k miles on it. I have not looked at it yet and was wondering if something like this is worth the $2000 asking price. Any comments about these particular buses and the worth of this bus would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Scott:
The price on buses can vary quite a bit depending on equipment and age. Spend the time to research what you want for size, type of powerplant, transmission, etc.
Generally newer is better than older and a bus just taken out of service may give less trouble than one that has sat in a field a couple of years. Judging by ebay and 422sales $ 2000 may be a bit high for an 81 gas IH, but if it had new tires, the seats removed, or its repainted the value could be higher. Ask to see the service records or talk to former owners service facility about the bus.
The nice thing about skoolies is that they come up for sale all the time.
Good Luck
Rickster

The IHC 404 gas V-8 is a very reliable and long lived engine. 300K+ miles is not unusual for them. The downside for them is if something goes wrong you will be paying about double what a Chevy or Ford big block costs for a rebuild.

Gas mileage with an automatic is going to be in the 3.5-5 MPG range.

Top speed is going to be about 60 MPH with the bus slowing way down on the hills.

If the bus has tires that are at least 90%, no rust, good brakes, no smoke, no leaks, and is basically straight and clean it should be worth $2K.

Personally, I would keep shopping. A diesel powered bus which will travel close to twice as far on a gallon of fuel in comparable condition can be found for about the same price.

Good luck and happy trails.
