I've recently purchased a 1980 Safari trailer (sleeps 4 adults and one kiddo) with full bath, a/c, heat, new awning and the works. We are planning on being what I believe you guys call 'full timers' and are taking to the road around october 14th.
Because doing this is my life dream, and I got the camper on the spot for under $1000 (it's in great condition!), I went into this knowing almost nothing about carrying out my plans - hence, I've come here for info and advice.
I have a couple important questions that I think I need to ask first:
1. My dad said that because this is a 30 footer, that I will need a CDL to haul it. Me and my fiance thought that a CDL does NOT apply to a private trailer. Does anyone know about this (we're currently in MI)?
2. I have a Chevy Tahoe (S10); though it is 4 wheel drive, I'm sure this will not be a sufficient vehicle to use to pull this camper. I was thinking that I would need at least a 3/4 ton pickup to do this; however, we were wondering if it's possible (and safe) to haul a camper of this size with a conversion van? Anyone have any insight as to where I can find out more info about hauling my treasure around this fine country?
3. Is it possible and reasonable to get a generator for this camper? I mean, are there pro's and con's to this and what types of things should we consider before making such a decision?
Wow! That sure is alot to ask, but we're so excited and have no idea where to look for help and info, you all seem helpful and friendly, and we'd be happy to be a part of this community!
Thanks for reading, and considering our questions!
Congratulations on your new purchase. Got a good deal it sounds like.
1) You do not need a CDL to pull a trailer.
2) Check your Tahoe manual to see its tow ratings. Same with any conversion van you consider.
3) A generator is good if you really need it. Most are noisy, so choose wisely based on where you will camp. You will not have a good time with others looking at you with a "hairy eyeball".
Hi Good luck with your new home.
No you dont need a CDL Its private
and under 24,000 gross weight.
You will not be able to tow a thirty
footer with a tahoe. S-10 Go with
a good 3/4 ton. As far as the generator
get a longer power cord for the trailer
and chain it to the front bumper of
the tow vehicle! NO NOISE Most trailers come with a 20 foot cord, So use all of it. Good Luck!
