5th Wheel Questions by Mark

We just purchased a used fifth wheel with a gooseneck hitch. I've already had the 2 3/8 (I think) ball installed in the bed of my truck. I have 2 questions.
1. There is a latching switch which goes from one side to the other to lock or unlock on the 5th wheel ball. When on the ball and in the locked position, should there be some type of pin or lock to secure the locking mechanism in place.
2. Do 5th wheels require safety chains? The unit was not equipped with them.
