We are about to purchase a diesel truck to pull our 36.5 foot fifth wheel rig. Given we don't plan to travel in winter conditions, should we purchase 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive ? The cost difference is about $ 4 K (Cdn), and there is a slight weight penalty.
Some folks say to get 4 WD since there are non-snow hazards, like soft shoulders and sandy sites to worry about, while others say those are rare and avoided with common sense and care.
What do other RVers think ?

Some good info at that web site. The main advantage I see to 4X4 is many can have the transfer case shifted to neutral allowing even some automatics to be towed without having a driveshaft disconnect.
