Registration Challenges by Dave
Post New Message I am currently working on assignment in the USA for a company based in Columbia, Maryland. I am a South African citizen with a South African driver's license and am only going to be working in this country for 6 months. I do not currently need to purchase a vehicle as the company which I work for is paying for a rental car which I am using. However, upon completion of my assignment, I will be vacating the apartment which I am currently renting and will holiday around the country for a period of approximately 4 months in a recreational vehicle. I have heard that it is better to buy a vehicle rather than rent one for such an extensive period of time. I have a number of questions regarding this:

1) Is it compulsory to have a US driver's license in order to purchase, register and insure a vehicle?
2) If "yes" to 1), is it compulsory to purchase and register your vehicle in the same state as which your US license has been issued?ie. If I have to get a license, can I get one in Maryland but still go down to Florida to buy, register and insure the vehicle?
3) I will not have a permanent physical address for the period of my holiday, is this a problem or will a PO Box for this period suffice?

Thank you for your assistance

Regards
David Tubb
