5th wheel or trailer Brian 6-22-03  
Total Newbie Here. We will rent first but want to know if we should go 5th wheel or trailer. We will need to invest in a tow car/truck anyway. I'm not sure I want to tow a car behind a Class A or C. Only 2 of us but like our creature comforts! Safty is an issue and gut feel says 5th wheel is safer!

I don't know where you could rent a 5th wheel to find out but it's the safer of the two. They are taller so in windy situations you would have to take it easy but the stability of the hitch in the bed is much better than a pull behind. Creature comforts can be found in both although I like the bedroom raised and seperate with the 5th. Feels more like a home to me!

I was faced with the same situation a few years back. Had a Toyota Camry, a Mazda p/u and a 25' class A. Needed a mininum of 30' RV for full timing. Considered a pull trailer and a 5th wheel. Either way I would have had to buy a tow vehicle, desired a Dodge Cummins for fuel economy because we would be parked for a couple months at a time & sight see with the tow vehicle. After considering all options settled on a 57 GMC ex-Greyhound bus conversion and towed my pickup with its camper shell. Have been very pleased with my choice. Air-ride suspension, 8-10 MPG on coach with toad, cruise at 70 all day, all kinds of storage room for my toys without worrying about overloading, then 20+ mpg with toad sightseeing with plenty of covered room for purchases along the way. For me it's the best of both worlds.

Prior to the Class A I had a 18' then a 24' pull trailer, pulled the 24' with a van conversion which worked OK. Have pulled goose necked work trailers (5th wheelers)and they are a lot more stable and easier to manuver but you cannot have a camper shell with them. That means that when you go grocery shopping with the tow vehicle in the rain an extended cab pickup would be nice.

When considering the tow vehicle,RV combination consider the acceleration speed, stopping ability (is the dog wagging the tail or the tail wagging the dog?) and how much additional weight you can carry without exceeding the manufacturer's recommendations. The RV business is very competitive and they have a tendency to cut corners, sometimes too close for safety. That is one reason the bus conversions are becoming so popular.
