Another school bus conversion insurance posting Dave 6-18-07
I just bought an incredibly cool, converted 1964 Chevy School Bus Motorhome. I had no idea how hard it would be to get liability insurance and I don't understand why. Judging from the postings on this website, I'm not the only one that's having trouble.

I have been with State Farm for over twenty years. I have three trucks, two cars, and a motorcycle insured through them. Sorry, no school buses.

An independent agent wrote me a policy with Progressive just last week. June 7, 2007. When I got my paperwork it said that converted and non-converted school buses are unacceptable vehicles. I called and questioned it. My policy is in the process of being cancelled.

I called GMAC, sorry, no luck.

I can't find anyone else to write me a policy.

I know there are a lot of old bus motorhomes out there, there has to be a company that will cover us.

I live in Alabama. I have a good driving record, a good credit rating, a good job, plus I'm good looking. Well, OK, three out of four ain't too bad is it?

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks, Dave

I'm new here. I've been browsing tons of forums for an idea of what to do. I was laid off from my job about 3 month ago. I've been looking for a job since then, but did not even get a single interview. I worked as a web designer for a publishing company for the last 5 years. Looks like is an active forum with active members and may be someone has some experience working as a freelance web designer. May be this category is not the most appropriate for this question, but I want to try anyways to get some opinions before I go ahead with my life. I'm wondering if it is possible in the current economy to find work for a freelance web designer and make enough to pay for rent and groceries. I was able to find a small project on craigslist and I developed a website for a company. It was a small project and took me only a week to complete. I got paid $800 for 1 week of work which is not bad. Please people give me some ideas. I have 2 kids and my wife is out of work as well. Thank you in advance.

Looking to insure a 1988/GMC school bus/71 passenger to be converted into a hunting camp sleeper. Need to insure for going and coming from camp site during start and end of season, about 150 miles round trip. No plumbing, entire bus seats to be removed, some electrical system for lighting, micro wave, radio and TV only.

The bus will be an empty shell for the most part, sleeping bed to be removable cotts, removable seating and tables.

Hmm it seems like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I'm still new to the whole thing. Do you have any tips for novice blog writers? I'd really appreciate it.

Why you can't get bus insurance;

School buses are narrower than Greyhound et al. The conversion puts weight up high. High center of gravity, narrow axle = rollovers.

Just wanted to put in a good word for American Family insurance.. I just purchased a 1997 Thomas-built bus that has been stripped and painted and registered with Oregon as an RV, but is a non-professional conversion and doesn't have a kitchen or bathroom. Wanted to get insurance so I could drive it home.

Was turned down by Progressive, GMAC, Geico, Safeco, and a number of others. They would turn me down flat because they wouldn't insure school bus conversions at all, or would take me through the process and then turn me down because my bus didn't have full RV installations.

Was starting to get panicky, but found this thread and someone mentioned American Family (above), so I called them. They transferred me to their local Portland office who were awesome, worked with me and ran me through underwriting without a hitch. I now have full coverage for like $320/year and drove my bus home last night!

Highly recommend them, am considering switching my other car insurance to them they were so cool.
