I have an '85 Toyota New Horizon which had never been changed out to the 1 ton axle. The right wheel bearing was starting to make a noise (63K miles), so I bought one out of a wrecking yard near Eugene, Oregon and put it in with help from friends. Took us about 7 hours, cleaning and repacking the wheel bearings etc. The new one came out of an 88 or 89, either Dolphin or Winnebago that had been in a front end collision. The bearings, brakes, and drums looked like new, and seems to be running well. Cost me $500, had the wheels and tires still on it. I had talked to Toyota in Torrance CA and they told me the replacement axle was no longer available, as did National RV, (Dolphin), who recalled 8,000 units, as I understand it. There is a wrecking yard in Creswell, Oregon that says they have one and another wrecking yard in Albany, Oregon that said they have one or two, I think both yards were asking about $600. |
