Hi i have a legitimate 1 ton axle...it was on a 1 ton refrigeration truck with a service body..i have used that vehicle for spares for my 1985 sunrader..joe in sanford, nc
I have an '85 Toyota New Horizon which had never been changed out to the 1 ton axle. The right wheel bearing was starting to make a noise (63K miles), so I bought one out of a wrecking yard near Eugene, Oregon and put it in with help from friends. Took us about 7 hours, cleaning and repacking the wheel bearings etc. The new one came out of an 88 or 89, either Dolphin or Winnebago that had been in a front end collision. The bearings, brakes, and drums looked like new, and seems to be running well. Cost me $500, had the wheels and tires still on it. I had talked to Toyota in Torrance CA and they told me the replacement axle was no longer available, as did National RV, (Dolphin), who recalled 8,000 units, as I understand it. There is a wrecking yard in Creswell, Oregon that says they have one and another wrecking yard in Albany, Oregon that said they have one or two, I think both yards were asking about $600.
A good source of information about the Toyota 6 lug axle, and a lot of other tech issues, is toyotamotorhomes.com.
The web site suffered a disk drive failure a few days ago, but the webmaster promises that it will soon be running at full throttle.
Hello Ron,
I just purchased an Odyssey 18' on a Toyota chassis with the 5 lug, (no middle hub) rear axle. I live in San Diego, and was wondering if you would tell me who to call and where I might get such a great deal.
Thanks for any help,
Kit
