1983 18' sunrader luke 7-29-06
I recently bought a 18' sunrader, and i got it for almost nothing, because the owner saw a beat up motorhome, vandals got to the interier and destoyed it, and moss was covering the exterier, when i got it home i stripped it down to nothing, and i cleaned it, then i painted graphics on the exterier like the new models, and i then bought a totaled 20' fithwheel and removed its interier, and put it into the sunrader, and when it was all done, it was like a new 18' unit that just came off the assembly line, and in total, it cost me 4,000, and two weeks of time, and it is better than anything i see on the market today, and i was offered 20,000 for it, but i did not sell it,because i could never replace it for less than 50,000, with gas prices the way they are the toyota sunrader has no fear, so you lucky few that has this model, you have a gold mine, if you restore your unit, instead of selling it, you too will have a one of a kind rv, who wants to spend a fortune on a new unit, when you have the most sought after motorhome ever made, the new chinooks will never compair to these, in price, or affordalility

Congratulations - I own a 1984 Sunrader I purchased new in 1984. I still love the old girl and will never get rid of it. I did put a 5 speed
transmission on the Toyota 22r engine.
Is yours a Nissan or Toyota and does it
have the upgraded rear end/wheels if its a Toyota?

Best Regards,

Harry Bunting

I am looking for a 6 lug 1 ton rear axel for my Sunrader. Also I am looking for a 16' or 18' Sunrader for sale
Re: 1983 18' sunrader luke 8-15-06
The unit i have has the five speed man tran, and no i did not replace the rear end, it has the five lug recalled rearend, but it has 90.000 miles on it, and i have inspected the rearend and its bearings, and i have changed the gear oil in it, and there is no visable problem yet''', but there is a toe hitch on this unit, but i dont think it has ever been used, and it is only a 18 ft unit. and i dont plan on over loading it when i use it. i also run the iner tire pressure three pounds higher than the outer tires. it sounds like it would help, but im not sure if im doing it more harm than good, and im also thinking of putting a synthetic gear oil in replacement of the gear oil recomended, but it also is just a idea.i do know that the rearend under my unit has the four bolts holding the axle in so it wont slide out if it does fail,so if i just take more care than normal, i may never have a problem. but i would replace it if toyota would give me a new part,it would be worth the price of installation, so if anybody has information that i do not about the recall and its limitations let me know. happy rving to all, luke

Hello Toyota & Nissan people;
Is $6500 for a V6, 1986 Nissan Sunrader, standard, 77K miles a decent asking price? It has been in Calif, so no rust. Pretty clean and seems to ride nice. I am rather smitten. Thanks for your help.

Hello Harry... I have a 1985 Toyota Sunrader auto. Was it hard to put in the 5 speed trans. How much did it cost you to do. I would love to have a 5 speed. What area do you live in...

Thanks in advance,

Re: 1983 18' sunrader harry 8-21-06
Hi JO,

I bought a cheap 5 speed on E-bay a couple of years ago. It was a W56 model. Be careful not to buy earlier transmissions (Lxx) because their input shaft bearings are too small and they are not reliable.
I live in San Jose California and google searched all over Northern California and found a fantastic Toyota transmission rebuilder in Fresno named Marlin Crawler: He overhauled the 5 speed and installed it for $1500 in my Sunrader. In addition, because we are talking about a 4000lb rv, he lowered 1st and 2nd gears so that when I take off in 1st gear, I no longer get clutch chattering. An excellent job and the new 5 speed has been reliable so far after 15k miles.

Re: 1983 18' sunrader Bob in Riverside 6-18-08
If your Toyota is all molded fiberglass it is a "Sunrader", it it is stick built (flat sides etc) it may be a "Rader". Both were built with identical floorplans by Monterey Leisure in the middle 80's in Elkhart, IN.
