Remodel or replace? has anyone added a slideout to a motorhome? kam 7-10-06
I love the layout of our first, used class c and though it's not our 'dream' motorhome, it's fairly close. We didn't look at any with slideouts when we went shopping because they seemed to be twice as expensive as ones without, and since this was our first RV, we didn't want to jump into 'too much' in case we didn't use it as much as they thought we would.

Well, we use it all the time and don't see any end in sight, so we're considering getting what we want for either our next motorhome...or maybe just making some changes to this one.

The major thing we'd like to upgrade to is a slideout for more floorspace (there are six of us). I remember months ago just poking around and finding a website for a company that could add a slideout to a motorhome...but of course now that I'd like to find it again, I can't.

Has anyone added a slideout to a motorhome before? I'd like to see what other folks have done to get their 'dream' motorhome. Adding a slideout would be fabulous for us since I've found it impossible so far to find a floorplan in a new model that I like as well as the one we have. It's just a matter of elbow room.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, stories, advice, or.....that you can give me on this!

Happy RVing!

You can definitely add a slide out to the Rv you currently own. I have done this 6 times so far and have orders for 2 more. The largest slide was 15' long that had 30" of travel.
The base price is around 24k for a 10' unit and it grows by about 1k per foot. That pricing is what we charge for upgrades on custom police style vehicles. I'm not saying its cheap. But it is possible. If a private person were to do this work, it would cost around 5k just in materials to have a weather tight functioning room. Less interior furnishings.

Hello,
I have been helping a friend of mine do some water damage repair to a 1998 Terry trailer with one slideout.

From the manhours required just to do repairs to a slideout, I would not even attempt to add a slideout to anything.

In my opinion, sell or trade what you have for a unit with the slideout designed and installed by the factory.

Just my $.02 worth,
John

Hi folks, I have 12 plus solid years in RV industries and several more on my own as well as 28 years on the road in full time mode, now my wife and I are going back on the road for good. I had a 30.5 Jaco fifth, first I added 6 feet and another axel to it then I added a bedroom slide, now mine was very basic, it literally slid on the existing floor to go out and in, though it was literally attached to the bed frame on wheels I might add so movement was real easy. Now days there are numerous companies making the mechanisms for the slide and lip pert is one, nice mechanics simple to install and bal accuslide is also another… a little more complex but rather simple in nature. One thing I know from experience pulling wrenches for many years also taught my less moving parts the better. We are presently in the throws of buying a 36 foot
Safari motorhome and no slides, first thing we will do is try it to see if we really want them, we don't travel all that much but rather walk the rig into the bush to a hard to get to lake and fish fish fish…. a month here a couple weeks there….but we
will see if we really need one first, there are simple rules to follow using a full time rig or just week ends, if your feeling closed in….GET OUT simple ya I know theres more to it than that but thats the basics…if any one is interested I can help… no linger have my gas ticket but anything else I can advise or tell yo how its done…thanks for the time..Richard

We have a 1994 Country Coach Magna 38'.

Would like to enclose the tolet and sink? Also add a fan in bedroom. A slide out sound great but not sure it would be cost effective?

Has anyone added an exterior door to a travel trailer before? I have an 29ft Keystone VR1, and as long as it is, it only has 1 door to exit from. They could have easly put a door in place of the window that was designed along the side. Thanks in advance for any input you may have.

Happy RVing and Happy New Years.

I have an older Class C also. Being older I am less shy about trying things. I considered a slide out but found the price a bit much. Instead I'm trying to design a fold down system, something like a tent trailer I suppose. My plan is to build a platform on the back of the RV that will be hinged on the bottom and will drop down the assist of a small winch. There will be a door put in the back wall to allow access. It can either be a patio/deck area, or have canvas walls and awning to make it into an enclosed room. My brother thought instead of canvas walls like a tent, I might just build four walls on hinges that fold in and lock out with a canvas ceiling. Am still in the planning stages, like whether to have legs or leveling jacks. No, it wouldn't be as easy as a slide out, but much less expensive. How it would look when locked up against the trailer would be completely up to how much work you'd want to do to it.

Hi. John. Have been searching the web for slide outs for a diy project like you did in 07. No answers for you. Am hoping you found some where that sells slide out accessories. I live in Devon. Just wondered how you got on. regards Nick
