Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Georgia 11-2-03
I was wondering if anyone remembers Butterfield Country and what became if it. As a child I used to go camping there with my parents.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake soto 12-26-08
We used to leave out trailer there all summer for about 6 years in a row. ALWAYS the same spot. My sister worked at the waterslide all summer.got in for free and dry slided after they closed for the day all the time. Took my 4 kds and wife there not too long ago and had a BLAST!! There I was, 38 years old and flyin around on my old school bmx bike!! NICE!! Mini golf is still there. All the marks in the cement where to hit it to get a hole in one STILL THERE!! Craig Soto here. Any regulars out there remember me? My sister is Michelle and my brother is Ruben. its nice to go there and enjoy myself and enjoy the memories. not to mention, i can finally drink beer out there without worried about getting caught!! Vail Lake Resorts is the name now. A little pricey, but worth it to me. Only an hour away from La Verne, California. My gas gauge on my V10 F350 barely moves going down there. Wayyyy worth the trip in these high gas price times.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Georgia 12-4-08
It was a great place. My parents kept our trailer parked there and we went at least once a month. I have some great memories of that place. We where there the day we first walked on the moon. I remember because right by our camp was a tire swing and after we saw the astronaunts foot touch the moon I ran to get to the swing before my brother got there. Me and my brother were in a promo for Butterfield Country on that very swing.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake cindy 9-6-08
I Loved this place, just bought my first travel trailer. Looking to go visit the best campground ever, Butterfield Country and get this web site. I am so sad it is gone. Reserve America has alot of great camping spots if you just log on and look. I have yet to find anything close to Butterfield Country though.:(
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Stacey 5-26-15
Butterfield Country rocked! It was my Disneyland- some of my favourite memories with my sister and awesome grandparents were made there. We went every summer in late 70's early 80's. Always camped in same spot next to showers and horses- remember Slim the old cowboy th s t owned the Heart Stables.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Craig Soto 2-27-09
For those of you wondering if the Butterfield Country charm is still there. IT IS!! Go to Valilakeresorts.com(I think). We camped there a few years back. I had more fun than my 4 kids did!! My wife said I looked like a kid out there. If any of you are local here in southern cal, make it a point to go camping there. I still have a Butterfield Country bumpersticker I won playing bingo. Its in GREAT shape!! Somebody should start some kind of message board so people who camped there back in the day can keep in touch. I would, but iam not that good on the computer..
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Kim G 5-15-09
My parents used to take us there in the 70's. it was amazing and some of my fondest memories. There was a pond with an island in the middle and a raft that you could pull from the shore to the island. we would go horseback riding with our parents and then ditch them the rest of the day! Good times.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Craig Soto 4-25-09
Wow, look at all the people who camped there. Well, we are going there next weekend. Now its called Vail Lake Resorts. I think iam more excited to go then our 4 kids!! At least now i can go into the bar!!:)
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Lanissa 5-30-08
Butterfield was the best! I loved the big oak trees and the tram...oh and of course the water slides.. wish it was still there!
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Cheryl 2-21-09
I remember camping at Butterfield Country with a whole group of people that would meet us out there in there campers. I especially remember the club house and playing Bingo and winning a whole slew of groceries and camping equipment when I won one time. I was only a kid at the time, and the place was full of people, and I was feeling pretty lucky! It was a great place, and I would love to see what Vail Resort is now. I hope it still has some of the old Butterfield Country charm, but I am 51 now, and I'm sure things have changed a lot out there.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Albert 3-25-08
Wow, the name BUTTERFEILD COUNTRY is something that brings memories to the heart of myself and all my cousins. Most of us are in our 30s and some even pushing 40 now. We were very blessed to have grandparents that would round all 13(at the time) of us up and spend at least 10 days out of every summer thier. Myself, being one of the younger ones, 5-8 yrs old at the time, never really looked into where this place was until recently. With our family being from San Bernardino, to a kid, it seemed a world away. I was astonished to learn it was so close to my current residence. I live in Menifee. Under my nose the whole time! Sad to hear its gone.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake MIKE J 10-11-07
THAT PLACE WAS THE BEST. I'VE BEEN TO VAIL LAKE RESORT AND IT DOES NOT COMPARE TO BUTTERFIELD COUNTRY. THE GOOD OLD DAYS ARE GONE.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Deb 2-22-04
I used to go there as a kid too! Didn't there use to be water slides all around the pool areas? That place used to be a great place to go with family and friends! I was just looking online to see if it was still around when I found this message.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Ed 11-5-03
It reopened a couple of years ago as Vail lake RV resort. http://www.vaillakeresort.com/
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Jodi 10-22-07
We went there all the time as kids. I was just talking to my mom about it. Remember the green train, the movies, square dances and the store? Sorry to hear its not the same.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Sue 11-6-07
We went all the time as kids, too!! I loved the water-slides! I miss the place. I still have pictures...
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Mark 2-20-10
Does anyone remember a rope walk crossing a small lake?
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Richard 2-8-08
I remember it too. My family went there every year when I was a kid. I remember the waterslides, horseback riding(I even remember the name of the guy who led the trail, Jake). I also remeber a hay-ride with singing.my first kiss(Heather Templin). It was a fun place.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Ada 1-12-08
I was just looking up to see what happened to Butterfield Country. I went there as a kid. I would have loved to take my kids there. I have not found another place like it. It is so sad to hear it is gone.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Terri 4-2-08
I used to go there as a kid too, and I celebrated my 13th birthday there (my 40th is in two days!!). When I found Vail Lake resort online, and realized it was the same place, my daughter, who is turning 13 in two weeks, decided she wants to go there! I'm sure I'll be disappointed because I have such great memories of that place!
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Sheila 1-1-09
We used to go there over the summer. It was a great place, we used fish in the pond with licorice. My cousin, Kimmie, found a scorpion in her sleeve - ouch! Was a lot of fun. I'm 40 now, those were the days!!!
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Tim Kryder 12-13-12
Butterfield Country 1973 What memories! Rock "n" Roll Hoochie Koo playing on the jukebox, teenage girls in bikinis, the rope bridge. (I don't remember any water slides back then) Took my first drink of Whiskey there and you could stand on top of your Schwinn and look right down into the girls showers! (Awesome Place) I was eleven and the girls were fifteen! :)
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Mark mcbroom 6-15-12
30 years ago this place ruled.. worked at the slides with Ken, Shannon and Grog. Dry slide and skip slides all summer.nite volleyball and the benches in the trees above the court..all the hot bettys..heading there today to burn one for old times..
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Tony 6-8-12
Butterfield Country was the best! I was young but I do remember hay rides, those special candy sticks sold in the general store, and the town square, and movies. When did it officially close the first time?
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Valerie 5-25-12
Im so glad I found this site! I thought the camp ground was totally gone. I'm so glad to here its just had a name change. Im in my 30s like a lot of you and had some of my best memories there. I loved the tram, the pool, miniature golf, and the town square. Hopefully I can take my kids there someday.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake samantha 3-6-10
Use to go there every summer in the late 80's with a couple of my girlfriends we would take my dad motor home out there & stay use to love the band & dancing on saturday nights. during the week we would make sure the volley ball net was up & play volley ball. had a plast there.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Jeannie 7-23-13
My folks used to take all 6 kids there for 2 weeks every summer. I loved the train, waterslide, picnics by the lake, dances in town square, and just the whole overall vibe of the village. It was the 1970's. Most of our old 8mm home movies are of butterfield country. One time I watched a girl drowning in the swimmming pool, devastating as she passed away right there, It was really sad and scary. I have years of memories there, it's a part of my chldhood.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Stacey 5-25-15
OMG! Forget Disnryland-----As far as I'm concerned this was the happiest place on earth. It was sone of the best parts of my childhood. My gradparents took us there every summer for two weeks. We rode horses everyday, went on the water slide, rode the tram, play minature golf, played pool, bingo, listened to live band, and did the camp fire every night. Oh yeah they did dancing too. Does anybody remember Slim Hart the old cowboy that owed the stables. Man we had the best times there. Now it is Vail lake Re as ort. Not quite the same.......so sad.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Rashad Coes 2-14-15
I thought this place was a figment of my imagination! I remember going there with my family. My dad bought RV and decided to take us inner city kids camping... I remember the waterslides, the Arcade... I a stranger gave me 5 dollars and I played every game in the arcade. That could never happen today.

To great memories
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Teresa forrester 6-18-14
What ever happened to Butterfeild country? I love that place so much. Great memories. I wish it were still there I would like my grandson to experience that great place. Anyone know any other place like that?
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake David Brownell 4-3-12
It was great reading everyone's comments. I was the General Manager from 1969 - 1973, and I think all of us who worked there enjoyed it as much as our guest. We especially enjoyed putting on the Saturday night steak fries and interacting with everyone in the town square. Great friends, great memories.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Nicole 2-21-13
WOW! add me to the Butterfield Country Fan Club! I learned to swim there. Loved the waterslides, the pools, the dances, the arcade and the overall feel of that place. I went in the late 70's, early 80's.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake CARL BAUMANN 8-7-10
I STAYED @BUTTERFIELD COUNTRY FROM EARLY SIXTIES AS A YOUNG CHILD. RODE MINI BIKES, BINGO, HORSEBACK RIDING. DO U REMEMBER SLIM HART? THE BEST MEMORIES OF MY CHILDHOOD WERE THERE AND AT WOODCHUCK! REMEMBER THE STEAK DINNERS ON SATURDAYS...I TOOK MY WIFE THERE AFTER WE MARRIED AND IT WAS ABANDONED....IT KILLED ME....IF IT COULD ONLY BE THE PLACE WE EXPERIENCED.
GOOD TIMES....

Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Shaw 1-30-12
That place was awesome :D
My parents used to take me and my sister there at least once a month for a weekend during school, then for like 2 weeks at a time during the summer. That was back in the late 80s.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Mike D. 3-20-10
Yeah I just visited the place and it is definitely not the same, I was dissapointed. I remember the square dances the barbeques at the main square where everyone would sit at the picnic tables with the red and white square table cloths, chasing lizards, red ant bites. hiking around, the little train that came around and picked you up, haybale rides, waterslides were the bomb. Movie night and bands at the square, making necklaces out of the seeds that fell from the oaks. All the stars at night and the bon fires. Miss it. Still have the brochure with the map from the mid seventies. All of the people that have wrote in this forum were probably there at the same time one year or another, same good feelings that we all shared wish every summer could be like that. Oh yeah dont get me started about summers in the 80s to Lake Nacimiento in San Luis Obispo area, also awesome times.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Bruce 8-31-10
Ah, Butterfield Country: 8th Grade Field Trip, water slides, swimming all day, hiking, finding lizards, kissing girls, campfires, guitars and singing, and watching the film "Me and My Arrow."

Its called Sundance Meadows now.
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Sabrina 11-26-07

This place was so awesome! A great family place! I keep telling my kids about how much fun it was. My grandparents, God bless them!, used to take us at least once a year for about a week, but always every summer. We went in the 70's. Rode horses everyday, the water slides, rented the 2 seater bikes, the campfires each night, took our walkie-talkies and hiked to look for Bigfoot. Still swear my sister & I saw footprints! ha ha! We camped in the same spot up against this great hill and took our Big Wheels & even our Green machines one year & rode them down the "steep" hill. What a fun time! I was just discovering boys & I remember the cutest dark hair boy who worked at the water slides. He was trying to pull a smooth line until he saw I had braces :(.... Still a great memory & I can still see his cute face! Too bad we can't all get together & purchase the place from Vail & turn it back to the the great Butterfield country it once was, go totally retro! Happy memories to all of us Butterfield Country kids!
Re: Butterfield Country /Vail Lake Soto 10-15-14
Mark, my sister worked at the slides when we camped there all summer. I remember the Grog!! I Mötley Crüe!! I remember dry sliding too. That was the shit!! Jumping slide to slide and launching in the air at the end of the slide. So bad ass. My sister is Michelle and my brother is Ruben.

Butterfield Country was a place were I have the fondest memories as a child with my Dad, Mom, Sisterand Brother. I enjoyed horseback riding and getting to know Mr. and Mrs Heart. I enjoyed fishing in the little tin boats, waterslides, hayrides, tram rides and going to play arcade games and movies.
I miss this place and have never found anything like it. I would like to find were Mr. and Mrs. Heart have their ranch?

I used to go camping there with my grandparents in the 80's. They belonged to the camping organization American Adventure. I have such wonderful memories from there- the 4 wheel bicycle rentals, miniature golf, the waterslides. Good times.
