Re: Engine transmission swap by Mark O.
Post New Message With enough time and $$$ you can usually do just about anything. The question you have to ask yourself is if the exercise you plan will be worth the effort.

When you contemplate swapping stuff in and out you have to keep in mind what your end game is going to be.

You can spend a lot of time and $$$ and not be much better off than what you are currently.

Some of the -5's had over the shoulder drop boxes similar to some of the Eagles and Flx's. Care must be used to not overstress the drop box with too much HP or torque.

Since you say you already have an 8V-71 the space should be okay and the HP and torque shouldn't be a problem.

A better swap would be to find an 8V-71T. It should bolt right up where to where the 8V-71 is currently.

The question I have is are you sure you have an 8V-71 and not a 6V-71? If you do have a 6V-71 swapping in a 6V-92T would fit better but you are really stepping up a lot in HP and torque. And if you go with an Allison you are really going to need a whole LOT more cooling capacity.

As far as using a GM 2100 from a gas engine and putting it behind a diesel engine, it may or may not work okay. The torque curve and HP ratings are vastly different. Sometimes the internals are different even though the externals look identical.

If nothing else, the torque convertor and shift points are going to have to adjusted or changed in order to take advantage of the different characteristics between the 8.1L gas and the 6.5L diesel.

Good luck and happy trails.
