Re: MCI versus GMC FAST FRED 5-28-99
I'm biased as I own a 4106, The 06 is built as an aircraft ,monocoque so its stronger AND lighter but NO slide outs or rear doors are possable without MUCHO high tech engineering. As the 06 is more rounded you get less wandering in cross winds and less stowage in an o'head cabinet.Flat floor makes easy interior and lower cost GM shells can help pocket book. MCI can be bright polished .A rebuild engine is same cost GM much easier cheaper tob add auto tranny or power steering if not on coach.
Basically there both good low cost units,,I would go with the BEST body and mechanicals,,or which ever is better looking to YOU!

I'm not biased, since I own a converted transit. As prev. stated, 06 does not lend well to major structural changes(monocoque). Neither does MCI (stressed ss skin). I think the major factor in deciding here is the power plant and transmission. 06 is a transverse engine and v-drive tranny. There is only one auto trans available, the 730. On the other hand, you can repower and re-trans an MCI5 with an infinite variety. I know of one w/a 8v92ta and 750 trans (It did require raising and lengthening the engine compartment housing). 6v92ta and 740 trans is a common conversion for the 5's. Both are classic lookers and the 06 is more aerodynamic in appearance, but it doesn't "look" as big as a 5. I have seen an 06 w/ polished lower skin (custom replacement). Both are sturdy and classic. However, if u want a 35', you might consider a Gillig Phantom. Many are coming up at Muni RTS auctions at around 3k-4k, 1983-84, 6v92ta, 740 trans. A whole lot more bus for a whole lot less money than either an 06 or a 5! Oh yes, and they come standard w/power steering! No, I don't have a Gillig.
