Aluminium fresh water holding tank Dean 6-19-99
I am in the process of mounting a aluminium finned, copper tubed radiator inside my aluminium freshwater holding tank. The radiator will allow hot engine coolant to heat the fresh water for showers, dishes, ect. My concern is possible electrolysis of the aluminium tank, or the radiator fins, or even the copper radiator tubes, and possible contamination of the water. Also, what effects would a magnetic water conditioner mounted on the coolant line or on the holding tank fill tube, have on the whole mess? Or even more hairbrained, what would it take to route excess electrical power from solar panels to the tank in a attempt to electrolysize the water into H and 02 as a alternate fuel source? Just wondering.
Re: Aluminium POISON MACHINE FAST FRED 6-20-99
IF you spring a leak of coolant into your FW tank you can die from drinking antifreez.
Most off grid attempts use doubble wall heat exchangers to slow down the POISON!!

Oops. Fresh water tank 150 gallons, heater from OEM passenger heating system. Have a smaller (50 gallons) cool fresh water tank. Will any liquid other than "Prestone" work well as a engine coolant? (Freezing wont be a factor).

Ausume ! What about just a 1/2" or 3/4" aluminium pipe entering the tank on one end and a curl or 2 inside then exit the same place, on my last RV I had a piece of pipe about 12" long 5/5" in dia. against the outside of the 6 gal. hot water tank from the engine, heated the water find. Doesn't take much, you could be on the road for hours ????

wrap copper pipe around the out side of your Fw tank 5 to 10 times hook it in on the outputAnd return lines that go to the in bus heating system close to your engine ,this way if the pipe leaks the coolent wom't go into your Fw tank
Also if you put a in a tank hook inline in front of your LP water tank the water heated by your engine will go into your Lp water tank and as long as there is hot water in the engine tank is hot as it goes into your Lp tank the main burner on the Lp tank will not come on this will give you a safe system .

Dean Use copper tubing wrapped around you water heater instead. You will not take a chance of poison in your fresh water, and you will still have some cool water. With your system, even if it were safe, all your water would be so hot you could not shower with it.

Distilled water and rust preservative is all you need to cool the engine,, if your SURE you wont be in cold .

What happens when you want some cold water while underway with your water supply nicely heated?
