I have a 1986 Ford 460 "C" class. This is an intermittent problem, at times you try to start and it acts like a bad solinoid, nothing. I have replaced the starter, solinoid, ignition switch and checked all grounds and they appear to be ok. Whe it occurs all you have to do is jump the solinoid and presto it starts. Please can anyone help me, I'm desperate...

Have 75 gm with 454 had same prob.
fixes:
home made aluminum heat shield over solenoid protects from manifold heat.
Used diesel solenoid with extra winding and heavy duty bakelite.
ran welding cable from batt to starter and also ground to starter body,
Am not sure which of these fixes did the job or was combo of all, but works never had problem since.
Try heat shield first cheap fix
solenoid next approx 30 bucks
Good luck
This happened on my 86 Ford pick-up. It was the neutral starter switch. It is located on side of transmission behind arm that shift linkage attaches to. New switch may have to be adjusted to allow start in park and neutral only. Jack

You say it is an intermittent problem but don't indicate when it is intermittent. If it happens only when the vehicle is hot, it could be a problem of too much heat.
If it is too much heat, sheild the components and see what happens.

I have a 1991 moterhome with a 460 Ford fuel injected engine. After not running for 24 hours or more, it is hard starting. If just a few hours, it starts good.

When the neutral starter switch went bad on our 86 ford pickup, it started as an intermittant problem lasting about a month, then would not start at all. Of course, we were not at home when this happened. I ran a wire from battery positive post to a monentary push button switch and then to solenoid for temp. fix until we got home. Repalced neutral switch and no problems since. Jack

I am needing a float (only) for my 1991 Ford R.V. I have tried having it repaired, but it didn't work. Buying the entire unit is an arm and a leg. Would really like to purchase just the float!!! Got any ideas where?????
