Remove all old windows & panel upper half of sides with smooth panel, Aluminum or steel. I used .062 tempered aluminum. I framed in window openings with 1" aluminum square tubing. Lots of Latex sealant and rivets. Windows were $25 ea with screens. Works great.

I removed the hinges at the top of the window assembly and removed entire assembly. I did not remove any structural wall framing.
I used pop rivets and caps to make them look like original. Pop rivets are not as strong as bucked rivets but I was not using them for structure, just to hold the windows in the wall. Latex seal in every joint adds strength.
