Engine rotation on buses Stan Brizzie 7-19-01
I am in the need to know what way the engines on the Eagle and the MCI turn. I have a chance to buy for a very good price a series 60 Detroit engine. Has anyone done this changeover. I have heard from truckers that this is the one to have for economy.

Eagle & MCI are right hand engines and so are all Series 60's. I know of 1 that is complete and running in an Eagle 01, couple to an Allison 748. A lot of work, but definetely do-able. Have to raise the engine compartment about 15" and extend it forward about 12" in the Eagle. Also, must fabricate a new electronic control cable to reach all the way up front to the computer. Also, change to the low profile oil pan and oil pump pick-up. Have a friend who is just starting an install of one in a Prevo Champion. It is coupled to a Fuller-Eaton 10spd. semi-auto Road Ranger. He is going to have to add 10" to the back of his bus, in addition to raising the engine compartment and cutting and dropping the tag axle. Bets are on as to whether or not he will go broke before it is finished. The guy w/the Eagle has his for sale for lack of money to finish the rest of the bus. As to cost--appears that 10-12k for a good used engine from a wreck w/trans, radiator, and other assorted associated parts (computer, which is essential and will have to be reprogrammed by Detroit; cables, controls, etc.)Certainly, a major undertaking, but a sweet deal when it's done. Might also consider the S-50 (4 cyl. of the S-60) that pumps up to about 350hp and came stock in many MCI's.
