I am considering converting from the 4spd Spicer to an auto. Can anyone offer some suggestions, tips or comments?
DONT, you will loose 8mph from top end , the fuel consumption will drop to 6 or 7 mpg and you will have lots of cooling and overheating hassles to work $$$$ out.
The automatic of choice would be the Allison vs2-6 or 8 series vdrive transmission. The basic tranny has a huge torque converter (3.75-1 torque amplification). Direct drive into a 5.50 to 1 diferential gives you 50 mph
Both trannys have an overdrive of 1-1.30 and 1-1.45. These transmissions are rugged and you can use an electric switch to change direction. I have developed a upshift inhibitor to help you with the hills. Fuel mileage is strictly a function of weight and terrain!
