Bus Recommendation Vcb 8-5-01
I am beginning to look for a bus
to convert to a motorhome. I
currently own a 29 ft class A
gas (Chevy P-30). I am a decent
mechanic (neverr worked on a
diesel before).

I need a resource to pick a brand model
for cross country touring. Where do I go
for a good opinion of different brands
models? Seems like everyone has a
favorite and it can do no wrong.

Thanks.

This is in many of the bus related sites as a FAQ or in Petes Library.

Would be happy to tell you why GM monocoque is best , BUT as an owner, you guessed , I'm biased.

Good luck in a great hobby.

In order to make any recommendations you need to be a little more specific about what you are looking for in a bus to convert.

Are you looking for a highway coach or a school bus? To answer that question you need to determine how exactly you are going to be using the rig. If you are going to be doing nothing except freeway driving, a highway motorcoach would be the way to go. If you are going to be doing a lot of traveling on secondary roads or even into the real boondocks a school bus might be the way to go.

Regardless of what type of bus you choose to convert, the actual conversion will cost virtually the same.

Another consideration is cost of operation. A gas school bus can be purchased very cheaply and parts and pieces are generally available almost everywhere. The downside is they are slow, fuel mileage will be 2-7 MPG. A diesel school bus will have a little more power and get 5-10 MPG but will still be sort of slow unless you get into a top end Type 'D' school bus like a Crown or a Gillig. Motorcoaches were designed and built to travel long distances at speed so they make great platforms if you plan to travel lots of miles. The downside is all of the systems on a motorcoach are expensive to rebuild and maintain properly (think in gallons not quarts when you change the oil).

Once you decide which type of bus you are going to convert, you then will have to determine which manufacturer you choose to convert. And most of the discussion with others will be pretty much a Ford vs. Chevy sort of discussion.

Good luck and happy trails.

Re: Bus Recommendation Portablevcb 8-15-01
Sorry I was not very specific. This will be mainly a highway driver but will spend a lot of time being lived in. We do like to visit campgrounds but would not mind being restricted due to ground clearance or length (since a lot of them restrict lengths to less than 30').

We do have realistic expectations, and, cost is an issue. I am looking only at diesel pushers for a variety of reasons, some even emotional ones :-)

I have come to sort of the same conclusions on school vs intercity. My feelings were that BB/Crown(maybe Thomas) were leaders in school buses while MCI looked to be best in intercity (boy this will spark some heat!!).

Thanks for the inputs.

Sounds like a coach will do what you want.

The 30ft rule was for trailers, so a 35 coach can negotiate the park roads very well.

What we today consider a secondary road was all that existed before the Eisenhour Interstate system.

Any coach does fine on most any paved road in the USA.

Coaches have less ground clearence so if your desires are 50 miles of dirt roads with a big center hump, or wallowing in the mud , a 4 wheel skoolie would be a thought.

IF you could stand the ride.

I usually figgure if the UPS truck can get thru , so can any old coach.

The GREAT agvantage to a real coach is that you can do a Skoolie type conversion,{all the works in the coach }and have those huge bays to carry your stuff.

35ft is easy these days , the 30 ft rule was in the days when a car was dragging a 30 ft trailer.

Foe anywhere a UPS truck can go a 35 ft coach can go.

BUT if you need 4 wheel drive your locked into an INTL dog nose.
