Does anyone know much about dinghy towing 4WD trucks? I have a 2001 tacoma 4WD with manual gearbox. Toyota advises against dinghy towing that truck but I don't understand why. The transfer case has a Neutral setting (as does the trans of course). Any words of wisdom?
Thanks!
I have been towing a Ranger 4wd for a while, but, I had to install a driveshaft disconnect since it has an automatic tranny and electric transfer case.
There are some transfer cases that require the input shaft gears turning to "circulate" lube. Don't know if that is true in your case or if Toy is just overly conservative.
Good Luck. BTW driveshaft disconnect cost almost $800 installed.
I'd be interested in the same info only
for a 1999 4x4 Toyota Tacoma 5-speed with maunal hubs. The owners manual isn't clear, the dealers (2 say no problem to tow 4 down/3 others say no way) weren't much help, and the lists on Motorhome.com an others convienently overlook one of the most popular small 4x4's?? Common sense says disengage the hubs/transfer an tranny and hitch it up, if not installing locking hubs on the rear wheels may be cheaper than installing a driveline disconnect 8*) Any help??
