I am new to bus conversions. I have been studying for the past few months, learning, trying to figure out the best(?) type of bus for making a conversion from. I have decided that (for me) I want a(n) MCI/GMC something of that sort to to my thing to.
My question is...is it necessary to raise the roof. I am only 5'10-and my wife is 4'11. I have seen articles going both ways. Seems like a lot of work if it is not really necessary.
The truth of the matter is, it's a big pain in the ass, for very little benefit. not to mention the GMC's monocoque design, which means the bus doesn't have a frame, so you are cutting out all the structural support of the coach. i would bet if the bus wasn't totally level when you did this, it would run the risk of being permanently tweaked if it didn't go back together correctly. there are a million guys out there saying "i'm gonna raise my roof". there are very few that actually complete the task, and most of them the people realize it's now going to take for friggin ever to finish the conversion, loose interest, then tow it to the scrap yard. a nice conversion takes a long time to do, unless you can devote endless days to it. raising the roof adds to that exponentially. if you want a duct system, get creative, and put it in the floor. hell, if you have a gm bus, that's where it was from the factory, just put some outlets here and there, and cover up the unused ones. do you really need to totally stand up in there? i have yet to see someone that doesn't duck down out of habit when walking into an RV, regardless of headroom. bottom line is, i would reccommend a stock roof, and put your time and money into the interior of the bus.
It"d ok to raise the roof if you have all the tools and the knolage that it takes I did body and fender repair for over 40 years and I know I can do it but the guy who never got his hands dirty should leave the roof to someone who has the knowhow not to say you couldn"t do it it would take longer than you would want and you would lose interest and a lot of money.
