I'm trying to convert a 1970 Winnie into a new motorhome. "But wait," you say, "a Winnie already *is* a motorhome!" True, but I don't like the configuration. I hate having the bathroom double as a shower, and having the bath/shower along the side wall where it makes the whole thing feel "cramped".
So, I'd like to remove the existing bathroom and build an all-new bathroom in the rear of the vehicle, forcing me to relocate fresh & waste water systems and possibly the propane system as well. All of which seems to make this project very similar to a bus conversion, which is why I believe this is an appropriate forum for my questions.
I want to more-or-less exchange the locations of the fresh & waste water holding tanks, to keep the weight distribution essentially the same. I think I have room for the black tank directly under the new toilet, and the gray one directly under the new shower. The fresh tank can go in place of the old black tank (there is no old gray tank), or I can put it in the cabin, (under a bench) above the old black tank.
Here are my questions I hope you good people can answer:
(Q#1) How much space must there be between the bottom of the toilet and the top of the black tank to avoid a backup?
(Q#2) How much space between the bottom of the shower and the top of the gray tank to avoid a backup?
I'd hate for waste to back up from an almost-full tank into the toilet or shower when the RV is climbing or descending a hill!
Also, In order to put the shower where I want it, I'll have to move the compartment for the LP storage tanks.
(Q#3) Are there any rules I must follow for the new LP tanks location? For example, does it have to be a certain distance from the generator, tanks, batteries and/or anything else?
(Q#4) Is it safe to make the LP tanks accessible from the cabin, or must they only be accessible from the outside, sealed off somehow from the living space?
The new location of the fresh water tank would be pretty close to the batteries. Although I certainly don't expect any leaks, if the tank is placed in the cabin, there's the rare chance that a malfunction could leak water onto the batteries. Therefore, I'm debating putting it under the cabin, where the current black tank is (instead of above it).
(Q#5) Are there any rules about location of the fresh water tank? Does it have to be inside the cabin? How far from other systems must it be placed?
