Paint for outside of 1973 Argosy Rose Williams 7-5-04
We just bought a 1973 Argosy, 24 feet. We want to paint the outside and have no idea as to what type of paint and where to purchase it.

Rose,
I sure do love those Argosys! That is all I will buy considering how much old Airstreams go for.
I repainted a 24 footer back 7 years ago. The original paint codes are still available. I do forget what they were.
You can call Airstream in Jackson Center, OH and they will be able to give you the exact paint codes. The paint type is DuPont Imron made by Dupont paints. You should have it professioanlly painted unless you own an automotive type pressure pot and paint gun.

Lou

Thanks for the information regarding painting our Argosy. I appreciate your taking the time to respond. I love the Argosy and we intend to keep the 70's theme inside.

Thanks again,

Rose

Most of the modern automotive synthetic enamels are excellent paints. PPG and DuPont each make good products. The paint to aboslutely avoid are the Imron and similar products. These will actually react with the aluminum and will cause corrosion of the skin sheets. Quansa Airlines and Boeing firgured this out in the early 70's.

Yes, the Imron is what was originally used on the Argosys. Not the best choice as a replacement.
You do have to remember to have the trailer stripped of the old paint. This is going to be done usually with a "soda solution"; almost like baking soda.
Then new primer has to be sprayed. Finally, the new paint can go on. DuPont makes an enamel that is a good cross reference for the old Imron color codes.
I hope this didn't get to you too late.

Lou
