Airstram-shaped teardrop trailer Roly 5-6-04
I know this is an Airstream forum, but I am interested in building a 4 x 9 foot aluminum teardrop trailer, complete with curved sides and the distinctive Airstream look. All teardrops have an exterior bunkhouse kitchen located beneath the rear hatch lid. My "Tear-Stream" will have a double curved alum hatch lid, to maintain the classic AS design. The two questions I have are; has this ever been done before and is there any advice that you could share with me before I start construction. My present all-wood custom/built teardrop garners a lot of attention, and I thought that what I plan to build will do the same. As far as I know, it will be a one of a kind and can't wait to get it finished........Thanks in advance

Funny,

I just posted a nearly identical message today at www.airstreamforums.com.

My plan is to build a mini (2/3 scale) airstream-looking trailer, but with the function of a teardrop. My early sketches would have the interior like a teardrop, just a bed. I've played with the idea of integrating a pole-type table for playing cards, etc. The rear would be like a teardrop-bunkhouse style, but I think I would do a fold down counter surface instead of a pop-up canopy. Does that make sense? This is so that I can achieve a flatter rear panel to better match the AS style. Also, the hydraulics to lift up a nearly verticle panel would be excessive. The fold down would double as a counter surface, so my cabinets and drawers could be nearly flush with the rear vertical surface of the trailer. The lower cabinets would be accessed by exterior doors, replicating the storage compartments on AS trailers, louvers and all. I am anxious to see how your progress is going, especially how you are thinking of making the trademark rounded corners. Good Luck and e-mail me when you get a chance.

Hi Forrest, I just read your post, and I have already built a model of my "Tearstream". Looks like you are going all out building a teardrop shaped Airstream. I am very involved with a group of teardrop owners and builders on the an internet forum and I got all kinds of valuable information from those folks when I built my all-wood Woody 1/2 Nelson teardrop a year ago. It can be seen at http://gages-56.com/roly.html Also, I don't have your email address, so I can't write you directly. If you are interested in the teardrop forum, the web page is; www.teardroptimes.com.weblogs

Check it out, it may be of interest to you...........Roly Nelson
