Towing a 20' Argosy with a Mazda MPV LIsa 6-19-03
Hi,
I have a new to me 1977 20' Argosy that I want to tow with a 95 Mazda MPV 6 cylinder, rear wheel drive. Does anyone have experiance or insight into wether this is OK? It has a 5000 lb tow limit but I'm concerned about getting out there and finding out on the first Mtns. that it's not strong enough.
Thanks
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
This message might be too late...
However, I have experience towing a trailer with a 1996 MPV. Towing up to 4300 lbs. is OK for your MPV. (see your owner's manual trailer towing section). It will help increase the life of your transmission if you install an aftermarket transmission oil cooler. Also, an automatic load leveling system that works well for balancing heavy loads is recommended.
When towing up mountain roads (approx 35 mph), keep you MPV in 2nd gear not DRIVE and keep the rpms at about 3000 rpm. (same with downhill). Try to go easy on the brakes and use pullouts as necessary (5 cars behind you) to let other cars pass...
One final note - Electric brakes on the trailer is also recommended.
Hope this helps.
Darren
