I've broken the front left lower oval window. Any tips on how to get a new one in? Grinding off all those rivets seems like a lot to replace a simple window--and even then it's not clear to me how the glass fits into the aluminum frame.
Do not grind the rivets off. Use a drill instead, and drill the out. Use a taper punch and tap them in the centre to make a dimple. Than take a drill bit ( much smaller than the diameter of the rivet ) and drill a little pilot hole but not all the way through. Then when you see that your pilot hole is straight take a dirll bit slighty smaller than the diameter of the rivet and drill it to the depth of your previous hole. If you have done this correctly you should be able to insert a pin punch close to the size of a hole you just made and give it a gentle tap and it should snap in half. If it won't budge drill a little bit deeper. And try another tap. Now, I am not sure about the size of the rivets in an airstream but aircraft rivets come in following sizes 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, 3/16. The rivets are slightly oversize so you should have no problem drilling with those size bits, given you have the wright size of the rivet. Start with 3/32 and work your way up. Let me know how it goes.
