Re: pulling a 31 ft.soverign by Vic
Post New Message Dennis,

You didn't give any information about the van. Depending on the chassis the van is on, 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton or 1 ton determines if you have enough vehicle to tow a trailer of that size.

A 1/2 ton chassis cannot safely tow a trailer of that size/weight. A 3/4 ton is marginal depending on the weight of the conversion and the running gear.

Check the axle ratio. It must be at least 3.73.
Check the tires. They must be Light Truck (LT) Load Range D to handle the weight. The LT sidewalls are stiffer to cut down on sway.

Check the axle Weight capacity. It would be a good idea to have your Van weighed to find out what the axle loading is without the trailer.

With the weight of the conversion, it is probably near the vehicle's GVW. I suspect that the weight of the trailer tongue weight will put it over the top.

My view is that it is safer to have more tow vehicle than needed to tow a trailer. I have a '78 Excella 500 31' and tow it with a 2001 Ford Excursion (on a 1 ton chassis) with the V10 310hp engine. The trailer weighs about 7600lb and the Excursion is rated to tow a 10,000lb trailer. It is comforting to know we have a surplus of power and weight carrying capability that provides a good margin of safety.
