Has anyone tried Stop leak to fix a leaking head gasket in a VW Westphalia 1991 Camper
van?
Hey man,
I just sold an 85 Vanagon with a rebuilt engine. The reason it was rebuilt was because of the head gasket. As the head gasket deteriorates all the aluminium parts including the head have damage from heat and contaminants. Yours might not. The gasket replacement job for this type of engine usually takes about 5 hours for an experienced mechanic. they also will charge you for removing the engine. basically, it's worth buying a new engine unless the one you have is amazingly clean.
good luck!
If so how long did it stop the leak for?
All the pollution controls are very hard on the engine. They are designed to make everything much hotte than it used to be. By running a cooler thermostat, advancing the ignition, etc., you can prevent head gasket problems.
However, once you have a leaky headgasket, it is best replaced before you damage anything. (Unless it is just a leaky head stud nut, which can be sealed individually with the stock sealant.)
But the head gaskets on the VW van are very easy to do. You do NOT have to even pull the engine. Since it is still pushrod, you do not even have to worry about the cam timing, etc. A good shop can do it for less than $600. If you do it yourself, do not break the seal at the bottom of the waterjacket sleeves, or else you have to extract the wristpins to pull the pistons and sleeves. You don't want to do that if you don't have to. The trick is to not rotate the crankshaft once the heads are loose, unless you have installed sleeve retainers.

I have a 1990 Ford Aerostar Van with manual trans. I had a leak in a hose and the van overheated...plus, 125,000 miles. The head gasket is blown...any tips besides replacing it? And, if replaced, is the engine going to be the same or should I trade in the car????? Help!
Threir is no remedy other than gasket replacement for any engine let alone one of these junk piles best off to scrap it at the local iron yard and do not purchase a windstar unless it is a 1996 or newer the 1995 models have problems as well. best of luck.
A bad head gasket is no problem, as long as you didn't let water get into the oil, allow steam erosion of the the head, or fry the bearings.
Most people stop with away when the tailpipe steams, so little damage is done. But remember to also replace the thermostat and oxygen senor, since a blown head gasket ruins both.

I don't want to seem bitter, but scrapping an entire van over a blown head gasket is a little extreme don't ya think Tom? Things happen. My head gasket just blew as I'm told by my mechanic. $1,000 bucks they say. 1987 Plymouth Voyager LE is what I have. Anyone have any do-it-yourself repair tips? I'd REALLY appreciate it as well as better price quotes. My van is paid for... so... I really don't buy the idea of scrapping it.Thanks!
