My check engine light just came on last week--car was fine, but noticed slight decrease in power on inclines. VW dealer diagnosed as Turbo---they want to replace it. What is the usual life expectancy of a turbo unit. I have 137K--drive 140 miles r/t to and from work. The car has been a great car--other than timing belts (2) and 1 set of glow plugs at 100K, I'm still on my original rear brakes. Any answers to Turbo life would be appreciated.
We have a 98 TDI Jetta, started making a high pitched noise when accelerating, started during a real cold snap. Eventually we had it looked at and they diagnosed the Turbo right away. 4 months later we still haven't had it replaced. The 'dealer' said it should be done right away, the local VW guru says sometimes they make noise...
The car has about 130K km, original everything, needs a glow plug as of yesterday.
Bought a 98 TDI with 133k miles. When the check engine light came on it was found that the turbo's "wastegate" was sticking. Hope that helps. Check out www.tdiclub.com That site has all the info you could ever need.
